Recycling Paper as a Box will Pollute Food

February 10, 2023
Researchers from Switzerland recently discovered that packaging boxes made from recycled paper can contaminate food. The main sources of contamination are toxic chemicals from newspapers.

The study found that the use of mineral oil in the printing of newspapers and the use of recycled newspapers in food packaging and wrapping papers can contaminate food. Some food companies in the United Kingdom and the United States have announced that they will change their packaging and will not use recycled paper for packaging.

Researchers have found that consumers who eat foods packaged in boxes made from recycled paper can cause organ inflammation and possibly cancer. In fact, foods such as noodles, rice, and cereals, which are packaged or paper-packed using recycled raw materials, contain more than 10 to 100 times as much mineral oil as possible.

In Europe, more than half of the cartons used for packaging are made from recycled paper. If the carton is made from wood pulp, it cannot meet the market demand.

A food safety laboratory study in Zurich, Switzerland, found that the mineral oil contained in food packaging can easily pass through the plastic bags of foods, thereby contaminating the food. The longer the foods are stored on supermarket shelves, the more they absorb them. The more mineral oil there is. European food safety standards stipulate that the amount of mineral oil absorbed per kilogram of food should not exceed 0.6 milligrams, and most of the foods packaged in boxes made of recycled paper have a mineral oil content that exceeds the standard by 50 times or even hundreds of times. If consumers consume foods contaminated with mineral oil for a long time, they may cause chronic inflammation of the organs and even induce cancer.

The Food Safety Laboratory pointed out that only aluminum packaging bags and plastic packaging bags made of certain plastics can effectively prevent the mineral oil contained in the packaging boxes from contaminating the food.
